Trump Joins TikTok Despite Previous Attempts to Ban the Platform

TikTok has emerged as a focal point amid escalating U.S.-China tensions in recent times as American politicians expressed worries that the parent corporation ByteDance Ltd. might be forced to surrender American users' information to Beijing or exploit the application to sway the 165 million Americans, along with over 2 billion users worldwide, who have installed it.

Former President Donald Trump has now joined TikTok, a decision he revealed in a predictably peculiar manner.

In a video shared on TikTok on Saturday from the verified account @realDonaldTrump, UFC CEO Dana White presented Trump, announcing “The president has now joined TikTok.”

“It’s a privilege,” Trump remarked, a rather unusual statement given that the politician and convicted criminal attempted to prohibit the app during his tenure. The video then showcases various scenes of the audience at the UFC event in Newark, New Jersey, set to the soundtrack of “American Bad Ass” by Kid Rock.

“The campaign is expanding its reach across all platforms,” an advisor to Trump’s campaign informed Politico. “Engaging with diverse platforms and channels is crucial, and this is just one of the many methods we will utilize to connect with voters. TikTok predominantly attracts a younger demographic.”

Both presidential contenders — Trump and President Joe Biden — have made efforts to outlaw the app. In April, Biden enacted legislation that could potentially prohibit TikTok in the U.S. unless ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, divests its stake in the app. During his presidency, Trump issued an executive directive to prevent new users from downloading TikTok, but his endeavors were thwarted by the courts.

Nevertheless, both Biden’s and Trump’s campaigns are active on the platform themselves.
