HBO unveils fresh photos of Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us season 2

Joel and Ellie have returned in a sneak peek at The Last of Us part 2. HBO unveiled fresh visuals showcasing Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey at Tuesday’s Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation. The upcoming season is set to debut in 2025 on HBO and Max.

Adapted from Naughty Dog’s adored video games for PlayStation, The Last of Us features Pascal as Joel, a weary survivor of a pandemic triggered by a widespread fungal infection. Ramsey portrays Ellie, a young teenager who could possess the solution to a cure. Joel is tasked with guiding Ellie out of a restricted area. The official synopsis describes, “What commences as a minor assignment spirals into a harsh, heartrending voyage, where the two journey across America relying on each other for survival.”

Reprising their roles from the introductory season in The Last of Us season 2 are Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel’s sibling, and Rutina Wesley as Maria, Tommy’s spouse and co-leader of the group of survivors in Jackson, Wyoming. The most notable new addition to the season 2 lineup is Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, who is poised to play a crucial role in forthcoming episodes. Additional actors joining for the second season comprise of Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Catherine O’Hara will make a guest appearance as well.

The Last of Us is scripted and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the latter who is a co-creator of the game. Serving as executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells. The show is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television. The initial season followed The Last of Us video game, while season 2 delves into the narrative of the sequel game, The Last of Us Part II.

The inaugural season of The Last of Us was a massive success for HBO, marking the network’s highest-rated premiere season of any series to date. Season 1 collected 24 Emmy nominations, including performances commended for Pascal and Ramsey.
